SCHWARZWURZEL
schwarzwurzel is a multi-year participatory cultural project in the German province that is being developed in collaboration with artists, young people, schools, citizens of all kinds and cultural professionals.
schwarzwurzel is schwarz=black, like the slate, the black stone, reason for the settlement of the southern Thuringian landscape around Steinach and wurzel=root, like the main theme of the initial project about rooting and uprooting, disappearing work and local destinies. Or: Work as a mediating activity between people and the landscape, as a cultural instrument for understanding the changing relationship between humans and their living space.
Steinach
The town is located in the Thuringian Forest, its population has been drastically reduced to around 4,000 in recent years, and its current situation is exemplary for the East German province: vacancy and an uncertain future. Behind Steinach lies the time of hard work in the slate mines; in front of it an unclear potential.
Awards of the schwarzwurzel project:
2011 Kulturriese (Giant of culture) prize by the LAG Soziokultur Thüringen.
2012 Prize in the national competition „Land und Leute“.
2014 selected Place in the Land of Ideas.
In 2013, schwarzwurzel became a funded project of the Fonds Neue Länder, Kulturstiftung des Bundes.
